The Legacy of Alexzina Griffin Community Activism Continues

Key To The City Fifth Street Block Club's Enduring Impact

Some time ago, the Fifth Street Block Club in northeast Rochester, in collaboration with Councilman, and the Rochester Public Market, organized a memorable event to strengthen the community. "Breaking Down Barriers and Building Bridges," held at the Public Market, was a testament to a mother's love and devotion, inspiring her children to embrace community activism as a way of life.

The meet-and-greet event brought together residents, local businesses, and leaders such as Mayor, city council members, area legislators, Commissioner of City Schools, police and fire personnel, and clergy. Local organizations and business owners joined in unity, aiming to build connections and share resources, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those who live, work, and do business in the northeast part of the city.

Tunya Griffin, block captain of the Fifth Street Block Club and a committed community activist, expressed the importance of the event: "Our goal was not only to connect people with the wealth of programs and resources Rochester has to offer but also to create a platform for local agencies and businesses to reach out to the community. It was an ideal opportunity to unite everyone in a safe and family-friendly setting."

Rochester's northeast neighborhoods, such as Marketview Heights and Beechwood, have witnessed a remarkable transformation due to the city's Focused Investment Strategy, an anti-poverty initiative. The program has reduced crime and blight while attracting new businesses and community programs, breathing new life into once-neglected areas.

Although the driving force behind this event, a mother who instilled her passion for community activism in her children, has since passed on, her legacy lives on through the Fifth Street Block Club. The commitment to building a stronger, more united Rochester remains unwavering, as the community continues to carry the torch and ensure that the spirit of breaking down barriers and building bridges endures.
